YAdudebooks (young-adult dude books) was launched in 2021 by Pam Withers, co-author of Jump-Starting Boys: Help Your Reluctant Reader Find Success in School and Life.
Pam is also an award-winning author of more than 20 young-adult outdoor-adventure novels particularly popular with teen boys.
She is well aware that some people will say there’s no such thing as a “boy book” or “girl book,” and she half agrees, but still feels this site may fill a gap, and be useful to some. Due to current societal norms we still live in a time where those who identify as boys tend to read less, and perhaps differently, than their peers.
FACTS
Fact: Only 14% of young-adult authors are male, and female authors are more inclined to write books with appeal to girls.
Fact: Boys have more difficulty choosing books than girls, and adults nudging book suggestions at them tend to be female (mothers, teachers, librarians and teacher-librarians). So, hopefully, this site simply offers another tool to those influencers – and to teen readers themselves.
Fact: The vast majority of book reviewers and teacher-librarians are female, who may be unaware of a bias toward books that appeal to females.
Fact: Boys read less than girls. Could that be due partly to the difficulty in finding books that appeal to them? If so, maybe this website can help.
