After returning from the battle at the Rust Mountains, what awaited Will was not a fairy-tale ending or another terrifying threat, but the commonplace events of his everyday life. Also, his friendship and a fierce battle with his dependable ally, the swordsman Reystov. An adventure in a snow-filled forest with the troubadour Bee. A battle with an ancient indomitable giant. And prayers and conversation with the god of the flame. Penned by the Paladin, these are the stories of a single winter.
This adventure is an action-packed read, and even though it is the fourth installment of The Faraway Paladin, this book surely stands on its own.
Each chapter (told in first-person) consists of different characters and events, highlighted well. And unlike many fantasy stories that focus heavily on action and adventure, this book takes the time to build in detail and supporting characters.
However, this style diminishes the main character’s role and impact. There are too many characters claiming the spotlight in each chapter; the author has overdone giving other characters attention.
Still, what impresses me most in storytelling, especially in fantasy-action, is when even as characters battle things out, readers are led to explore why villains became villains.
The pace fits the story, and the transitions are smooth. Despite the multitude of plots, I never got confused or had to re-read. Also, the author is very creative in the use of fantasy characters.
All in all, a highly recommended read for teens who are fond of fantasies, magic and adventure.
