Deadmau5

Deadmau5 is the stage name of Joel Thomas Zimmerman, a pioneering Canadian electronic music producer and DJ. Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, in 1981, he is globally recognized for his progressive and electro house productions and his custom performance helmet, the mau5head. A major figure in bringing electronic dance music to mainstream audiences, Zimmerman has received seven Grammy Award nominations and won four Juno Awards. His career, spanning over two decades, includes founding the influential Mau5trap label, forming supergroups like Kx5 with Kaskade, and producing a catalogue of acclaimed albums and singles.

Early life and origins of the name

Joel Thomas Zimmerman was born on January 5, 1981, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, to Nancy, a visual artist, and Rodney Thomas Zimmerman, a General Motors plant worker. He has an older sister, Jennifer, and a younger brother, Chris, and his ancestry includes German, Swiss, and English heritage. Zimmerman attended Westlane Secondary School in his hometown and his interest in technology began at a young age, often taking apart and reassembling household electronics. This fascination extended to computers and video games, which led him to begin creating chiptune music as a teenager, and during these years, he also started attending raves, immersing himself in the electronic music scene that would later define his career. The unique stage name Deadmau5 originated from a personal computer incident when his computer began emitting an odour and Zimmerman opened the case to discover a dead mouse inside, which led his friends to jokingly call him the "dead mouse guy." When attempting to register the name "Deadmouse" in an online chat room, he found it was one character too long for the platform's limit, so he subsequently shortened it to "Deadmau5," employing leetspeak by replacing the 's' with a '5' where the word "mau5" is a stylized spelling of "Maus," the German word for mouse, though it is pronounced the same as the English word.

Career beginnings and early releases (1998 to 2006)

Zimmerman's music career began in the late 1990s, heavily influenced by chiptune and the demoscene, and he produced his early work using the program Impulse Tracker. In 1999, while learning 3D modelling software, he created the initial design for what would become his mau5head logo, which has since appeared in many colours and designs on his album art. He briefly worked for an online music licensing company and also worked as a programmer during this period, and in 2000, under the group name Dred and Karma with Derek Caesar, he released the vinyl singles "I Don't Want No Other" and "Suck This." He began uploading music to the online community SectionZ and started producing under the Deadmau5 alias in 2002, often working from a local record shop's recording studio while hosting a radio show in Niagara Falls. His debut studio album, Get Scraped, was released on July 26, 2005, and around this time, he teamed up with producer Steve Duda to form the electro house duo BSOD, whose 2006 single "This Is The Hook" topped the Beatport Top 100 chart. In 2006, Zimmerman signed to Play Records and released his second album, Vexillology, on November 6, and that same year, he also self-released two compilation albums: Deadmau5 Circa 1998 to 2002, featuring older tracks, and A Little Oblique, containing new material, which together presented his early experimentation and groundwork for his signature sound.

Breakthrough and mainstream success (2006 to 2011)

In 2007, Zimmerman founded his own record label, Mau5trap, which, alongside Ultra Records and Ministry of Sound, first released the single "Faxing Berlin." Inspired by friend Jay Gordon of the band Orgy, he wore a helmet based on his mau5head logo for the first time in 2008, the same year he joined the electronic band WTF? with Tommy Lee, DJ Aero, and Steve Duda, a group that has only four tracks and rarely performs. His breakthrough came with the 2008 album Random Album Title, which included the tracks "Not Exactly," "Faxing Berlin," and his first collaboration with Kaskade, "I Remember," a song Rolling Stone later listed as one of the 200 greatest dance songs of all time. The album was certified gold in Canada and won a Juno Award, and the song "All U Ever Want" with Billy Newton-Davis also won a Juno in 2008, while Zimmerman received his first Grammy nomination in 2008 for Best Remixed Recording for his remix of Morgan Page's "The Longest Road." His fourth studio album, For Lack of a Better Name, was released on September 22, 2009, and it featured the chart-topping single "Ghosts 'n' Stuff" with Rob Swire, which reached number one on Billboard's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, and the critically praised instrumental "Strobe," which Billboard Dance listed as his best song in 2017. The album won a Juno Award in 2010, and in April 2010, he unveiled his innovative "Cube" stage at the Coachella festival, a major production element that would define his live shows for years. His fifth album, 4×4=12, followed on December 7, 2010, supported by singles like "Some Chords," "Animal Rights" with Wolfgang Gartner, and "Sofi Needs a Ladder," which won a Juno, and the album and the single "Raise Your Weapon" earned Grammy nominations in 2012 for Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Dance Recording. During this period, Zimmerman also performed at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards with Jason Derulo and Travie McCoy after being named MTV's house DJ, and he received another Grammy nomination for his remix of Foo Fighters' "Rope" in 2011.

Album releases and label moves (2012 to 2019)

Zimmerman's sixth studio album, Album Title Goes Here, was released on September 24, 2012, and it featured singles such as "The Veldt" with Chris James, named one of the 50 best songs of 2012 by Rolling Stone, and "Professional Griefers" with Gerard Way, named a top 40 song of 2012 by FUSE TV. The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronica Album, and at the 54th Grammy Awards in February 2012, Zimmerman attended with three nominations and trolled fellow artist Skrillex by changing his shirt to one with Skrillex's number on it. In November 2013, he left his long-time label Ultra Records and signed with Astralwerks, and that same month, he deleted three years of music from his SoundCloud and replaced it with an EP of seven piano sonatas called 7, named for the seven deadly sins. He also launched his techno alias, Testpilot, in March 2014 with the release of "Sunspot (White Space Conflict)." His seventh album, the double-disc While(1<2), was released on June 17, 2014, through Astralwerks and Virgin EMI, featuring singles like "Avaritia" and "Seeya" with Colleen D'Agostino of The Material, and the album received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2015. In 2014, Ferrari sent Zimmerman a cease and desist letter regarding his highly customized 458 Italia, which he called the "Purrari" and had fitted with custom badges and a Nyan Cat wrap before later selling it on Craigslist. After a brief hiatus in late 2015, during which he deleted social media accounts and cited struggles with depression, Zimmerman returned to release his eighth studio album, W:/2016Album/, on December 2, 2016, preceded by singles "Snowcone" and "Let Go" featuring Grabbitz. The subsequent years focused on diverse projects including the 2018 orchestral compilation Where's the Drop? with Gregory Reveret, initially a Tidal exclusive, and the launch of the Mau5ville EP series which featured collaborations with artists like Lights and Mr. Bill. He composed his first original film score for the 2019 Netflix film Polar, releasing the soundtrack through Mau5trap, and in late 2019, he released three singles: "Satrn," "Coasted," and "Fall," demonstrating his versatility beyond traditional dance music formats.

Musical style, collaborations, and live production

Deadmau5's music is primarily rooted in progressive house and electro house, though he has explored other genres including techno under his Testpilot alias. His production is known for its melodic complexity, driving rhythms, and detailed sound design, with early influences from chiptune and the demoscene clearly present in his work. A consistent feature of his career has been extensive collaboration with a wide array of artists across the electronic and alternative music spectra, with key collaborators over the years including Kaskade, Rob Swire, Wolfgang Gartner, Steve Duda, and Chris Lake. His work with Kaskade, spanning from "I Remember" in 2008 to the 2023 Kx5 project, is particularly notable, and more recent partnerships include work with Rezz, Lights, and the Neptunes, as well as vocalists like Gerard Way, Skylar Grey, and Grabbitz. His live performances are recognized for their technological innovation and visual spectacle, with the centrepiece for many years being the "Cube" stage, a massive LED structure that debuted at Coachella in 2010. He consistently performs wearing a version of his mau5head helmet, and the "Retro5spective" tour in 2024 featured mau5heads from different eras of his career alongside the Cube, creating a multi-sensory experience. He has also been involved in gaming, creating sound packs for Dota 2 and performing at The International 5 in 2015 at Seattle's KeyArena, and his business ventures extend into software with platforms like Auto/Pilot, his live-performance software designed for creative mixing, real-time arrangement, sampling, sequencing and automation.
