Dr. Allan Grill, chief of family medicine at Markham-Stouffville Hospital, underscores the life-saving potential of proper education and emergency preparedness.

"These life-threatening outcomes are totally preventable if people are educated, the students have the EpiPen on them, they know what symptoms to look out for, it's administered properly,"
he states. His comments reflect the medical consensus that most severe allergic reactions in schools could be prevented through proper planning and awareness. Even minute amounts of allergens transferred through cross-contamination, such as when a knife used for peanut butter is then used to cut another food, can trigger reactions in highly sensitive individuals, making comprehensive education about food handling essential.

Jennifer Gerdts, executive director of Food Allergy Canada, emphasizes the psychological benefits of having clear safety protocols in place.

"What we do know when we hear from the community is when a plan is in place, it's been discussed, and people are aware of the food allergy, the kids feel confident,"
she explains. This confidence comes from knowing that teachers, staff, and peers understand their condition and know how to respond in an emergency.
