Sun International reports strong H1 for SunBet with 35.5% revenue growth, eyes further African expansion
Sun International's SunBet online gambling platform delivered 35.5% revenue growth in H1 2024, outpacing South Africa's market, as the operator pursues product improvements and potential expansion into new African markets while benefiting from land-based casino synergies.
Sun International has reported robust first-half performance for its SunBet online gambling platform, with revenue surging 35.5% year-on-year to R1.18 billion ($73.6 million) as the operator executes its strategy to gain market share in South Africa and explore expansion opportunities across Africa. The strong online growth contributed significantly to the company's overall financial performance during the period.
Online growth driving group performance
The 35.5% revenue increase for SunBet substantially outpaced South Africa's overall online gambling market growth of 19% during the same period, demonstrating the platform's accelerating momentum. This online performance helped drive Sun International's total group income up 7.4% to R6.58 billion for the first half when excluding the Table Bay Hotel operations, which the company manages under an agreement with IHG rather than owning outright.
At its March Capital Markets Day, Sun International set an ambitious target to double SunBet's share of South Africa's online gambling market from its current position of 4.5%. While the company did not provide an update on its exact market share progression since that announcement, CEO Anthony Bengtsson emphasized during the earnings call that product development remains central to SunBet's next phase of growth.
African expansion strategy taking shape
Sun International is actively pursuing both organic and inorganic growth opportunities for SunBet across Africa. The operator recently extended its geographic footprint by launching in Namibia in May through its Bede Gaming-powered platform, following its entry into Botswana earlier in 2024. These moves represent the first steps in a broader regional strategy that includes evaluating opportunities in Zambia, Kenya and Ghana.
Bengtsson highlighted the company's flexible approach to expansion during the earnings call.
"We are still open to and keen on consolidating minorities if there is opportunity that is being presented," he said. "In terms of the SunBet business, there might be opportunities to consolidate locally, but there might also be opportunities outside of South Africa. We are looking at all of it, but we have a very high bar for what we deem to be good investments."
Product enhancement roadmap
Sun International recently introduced a new user interface for SunBet in both South Africa and Botswana as part of ongoing platform improvements. Bengtsson confirmed that additional enhancements are planned throughout the remainder of 2024, building on the platform's demonstrated capacity to handle peak loads during major events like the World Cup.
The CEO acknowledged that while the sportsbook infrastructure proved capable during the World Cup, SunBet still has work to do to improve its sports betting offering. Currently, casino products dominate SunBet's revenue mix at approximately 90%, with sports betting contributing just 10% - a significant underrepresentation compared to the broader South African market where sportsbook typically accounts for 35%-40% of online gambling activity.
"That is the delta we have to close by delivering a better product and better operational intensity in our sports business," Bengtsson said, outlining the company's strategic focus to rebalance this product mix.
Land-based casino recovery creates synergies
Sun International's H1 results also revealed positive developments in its land-based casino operations, with revenue increasing 1.5% to R3.42 billion - the segment's first growth in three years. The company's market share in South Africa's land-based casino market grew 2.3 percentage points to 49%, though gross profit dipped slightly by 0.7% to R2 billion due to increased investment in the segment.
Bengtsson emphasized the growing synergies between Sun International's land-based and online operations, noting the potential to capture more of its existing casino customers' online gambling activity through SunBet.
"We look increasingly at our business as one customer ecosystem or one customer platform," he explained. "SunBet probably wouldn't be where it is today without a land-based business, and a land-based business probably wouldn't be where it is today without SunBet. We continuously leverage off one another."
The CEO pointed out that while most of Sun International's land-based customers already participate in online gambling, not all currently use SunBet - representing a clear opportunity for cross-platform customer capture and revenue growth.
Sustaining momentum through product and operations
Bengtsson expressed confidence in maintaining SunBet's growth trajectory, citing continued momentum from the World Cup customer acquisition period into the second half of the year. While acknowledging the typical summer slowdown in sports betting activity during July when many football leagues are inactive, he noted underlying improvements in operational performance that should support ongoing growth.
On the land-based side, Bengtsson highlighted the sustainability of recent operational improvements and market share gains.
"Our ambition, as we outlined in March, has always been to change the trajectory of our land-based business, which I think we now have done," he said. "Our ambition is now to continue to take market share in the land-based casinos."
This dual focus on strengthening both digital and physical gambling operations positions Sun International to capitalize on the converging South African gambling market, where customer behavior increasingly spans both channels. The company's integrated approach and planned product enhancements for SunBet suggest further growth potential as it executes on its African expansion strategy.
